THE COIN IN QUESTION IN THIS PARABLE WAS A SILVER DRACHMA WORTH ABOUT 5 CENTS. IT WOULD NOT BE DIFFICULT TO LOSE A COIN IN AN ISRAEL PEASANT'S HOUSE AND IT MIGHT TAKE A LONG SEARCH TO FIND IT. THE HOUSES WERE VERY DARK, THERE WAS ONLY ONE WINDOW ABOUT 18 INCHES ACROSS. THE FLOOR WAS DIRT COVERED WITH DRIED REEDS AND RUSHES; LOOKING FOR A COIN ON A FLOOR LIKE THAT WAS LIKE LOOKING FOR A NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK.
THERE ARE TWO REASONS WHY THE WOMAN MAY HAVE BEEN SO EAGER TO FIND THE COIN.
(1ST) IT MAY HAVE BEEN A MATTER OF SHEER NECESSITY. 5 CENTS DOES NOT SOUND VERY MUCH, BUT IT WAS MORE THAN A WHOLE DAY'S WAGE FOR A WORKING MAN AT THAT TIME. THE WOMAN MAY WELL HAVE SEARCHED BECAUSE, IF SHE DID NOT FIND, THE FAMILY WOULD NOT EAT.
(2ND) THERE MAY HAVE BEEN A MUCH MORE ROMANTIC REASON. THE MARK OF A MARRIED WOMAN WAS A HEADDRESS MADE OF TEN SILVER COINS LINKED BY A SILVER CHAIN. FOR YEARS, A GIRL WOULD SCRAPE, AND SAVE TO GATHER HER TEN COINS, FOR THE HEADDRESS WAS ALMOST THE EQUIVALENT OF HER WEDDING RING. IT IS EASY TO THINK OF THE JOY OF THE WOMAN WHEN SHE HELD IT IN HER HAND AGAIN. GOD, SAID JESUS, IS LIKE THAT.
NO JEW EVER CONCEIVED OF A GOD WHO WENT OUT TO SEARCH FOR SINNERS. WE BELIEVE IN THE SEEKING LOVE OF GOD BECAUSE WE SEE THAT LOVE INCARNATE IN JESUS, THE SON OF GOD, WHO CAME TO SEEK AND TO SAVE THAT WHICH WAS LOST.
Life Application: When did you become a believer in the Father's love? Or, like me, were you raised in a Sunday school where you were taught the love of Jesus for lost sheep, and that I was one of them.
Praise/Prayer: Dear Father, I am so thankful for Your love, and Jesus' love. He was willing to come to earth, become a human being, just so He could die for the sin of all mankind. What love! Thank You for the Bible which tells us of all that Jesus did just so we could be saved, and go to Heaven to be with You. Amen!
