PSALM 91:1-3

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust."
Surely he will save you
    from the fowler's snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.

Meditation

This wisdom Psalm expresses confidence in the Almighty God, who provides shelter for those who take refuge in Him. They receive redemption, life, and glory from the Lord, who loves and cares for those who seek Him. "The Most High" is an ancient title that expresses the Lord's exalted status as the ruler and protector of the godly.

God Almighty occurs about 50 times in the Old Testament. It was a name by which God was known to the patriarchs. Others relate its origin to the Akkadian word for mountain indicating God's greatness, strength, or His everlasting nature. Another explanation is that Shaddai is the all-sufficient God, eternally capable of being all that His people need.

In verse 3, the Psalmist invites the godly to trust in the Lord and find protection in Him. God protects the godly from deadly disease and even a destructive word.

Another translation uses the word "pestilence:" "Attacks that come from a plague." This sounds like what we are facing in the world today.

Life Application:

A host of people all over the world are meditating on this excellent and timely passage. Follow its directions and have confidence in His promises.

Praise/Prayer:

"Dear God, my Father: I read this Psalm every day; millions around the world are taking refuge in it daily. We are dwelling in Your presence and ask You to deliver us from the enemy. Great are You, God! Amen."
