Jamaica Diaspora Day of Prayer and Fasting - a welcome dose of divine relief after the violent police actions in Kingston, the nation's capital - will be held Aug. 2 throughout the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom and other areas of the Jamaica diaspora.

Church leaders from the BronxBrooklyn and New Jersey will take part in the New York area effort, according to Geneive Brown Metzger, Jamaica's consul general in New York.

"These are indeed very challenging times for our nation as we continue to grapple with the diverse and critical issues for which we must seek divine intervention," said Brown Metzger.

The sixth annual event will help heal the wounds caused by the deadly extradition of drug suspect Christoper (Dudus) Coke to the U.S. More than 70 people and three law enforcement officers were killed during a four-day siege.

Brown Metzger said the consulate, the Intercessory Prayer Ministry International (IPMI) organization and the clergy members have united for the event.

Participating churches will open their doors for "those persons concerned about the growing moral declension on the island of Jamaica," said the Rev. Newton Gabbidon, founder, and president of the Brooklyn-based IPMI and planning committee chairman.

In the Bronx, clergy and their churches taking part in the event include the Rev. Samuel Vassel of the Bronx Bethany Church of the Nazarene and the Rev. A.G. Quarrie of Bronxwood International Church of God.

In Brooklyn, the Rev. Wenton Fyne of Beulah Church of the Nazarene and the Rev. H. Dennis Campbell of Rehoboth Open Bible Church will be participating. The Rev. Andrew Bennett of the Elim Missionary Church in Paterson, N.J., also will be on hand.
