While Yet There is Time

LUKE 12:54-59 ---

Although Jesus shifts His talking from the disciples to talking with the crowds, there is a definite connection between what He has said, and what He now says. The parables in verses 36-48 address the crisis of His future return; verses 49-53 speak to the crisis of division brought by His own ministry. The crisis Jesus speaks of in verses 54-56 is that of discerning the times. In verse 56, Jesus specifically states that this crisis is that of His Kairos (critical moment). Kairos is a Greek word meaning "time", and represents the moment of critical decision or utmost importance. For Jesus, this Kairos was the coming of the Kingdom in His person, and all the previous verses in this chapter were an attempt by Jesus to prepare His hearers for the importance of this critical time.
Jesus was comparing the ability of the people to understand His kingdom with their ability to understand the weather. When Jesus speaks of the cloud forming in the west, He is referring to the Mediterranean Sea where rain clouds form, and then come over the hills of Israel. The south wind refers to the wind storms that come up from the Arabian desert.

Jesus called them hypocrites because they applied an honest evaluation of circumstances in determining the weather, but they would not exercise that same kind of honest evaluation in determining who He was, and what His purpose might be. The problem was not in the evidence. The difficulty was in the way the people approached the proofs.  In verses 58-59, Jesus gave them an illustration designed to emphasize the importance of acknowledging Him as the Messiah. The magistrate represents God; the adversary is Jesus. Jesus does not desire to be anyone's adversary, but those who reject Him force that role upon them.

Life Application: Is Jesus your friend, or your adversary? The choice is yours. I encourage you to make Him your dearest, and best friend. You will love the relationship.

Praise/Prayer: Dear Father, what comfort there is in knowing that Jesus is my friend. An old hymn says,"What a friend we have in Jesus all our sins, and griefs to bear." I can't imagine Him being my adversary. I need Jesus as my Savior, Friend, and constant companion.   Life without Him would not be worth living. Thank You for loving me, and forgiving me for my shortcomings. I long to spend eternity with you. Amen!
