ScriptureHebrews 6:17-18

The implication here is that God, even though He is not like men, confirmed His promise to Abraham, and his descendants by an oath. That oath underscored God's unchangeableness, "the immutability of His counsel." To do this He accommodated himself to the human custom of emphasizing one's word by means of an oath, thus communicating the solemnity, and import of His promise. His oath was to grant assurance to Abraham's heirs. This assurance flows from two unchanging realities. The first is clearly stated: God cannot lie. The certainty of a promise depends on the nature of the one who makes it. In this case, it is the LORD, the all-powerful Creator, the righteous judge of all men, who made the promise. His word is His bond. Whatever He says, without doubt, it will happen. The second unchanging reality is implied in the oath. Even though God cannot lie, He has taken another step; He exclaims that the oath is based on His own unchanging nature. The purpose of the oath was to strengthen the assurance of those who are to inherit the promises. God's promise and His oath are true because He cannot deny His own righteous character. It does not change. The result of God's promise and oath is our "strong consolation." The unchanging character of God assures the believer of the fulfillment of everything He has promised. All believers who have turned from the judgment due them, because of their sins have seized upon the hope which God the Father has offered in His Son, Jesus. Since it is not yet fully realized, it is hope. It is "set before us" as the promise was to the patriarchs. It is grounded in God's immutability, even though it is as yet unfulfilled. The promise of the subjection of the universe to Jesus at the end of this current age provides believers with the encouragement to endure.

Life Application:(Ask the Holy Spirit.)

Praise/Prayer: Dear Father, You are absolutely the Most. You make promises to people who change all the time. Your word is immutable. People's words are seldom kept, even between friends. I know that someday we will be like You, but until then I must accept the fact that no matter how long it takes, your promise will come to pass. It is up to me to believe that, and not allow the devil to talk me out of believing. Forgive me for my weakness and, Holy Spirit, help me to cling to "the promises of God my Savior."
Amen!
