Rev. William Ilnisky

Scripture: Hebrews 6:19-20

In the ancient world, the anchor was a symbol of hope.  The writer of Hebrews insists that believers possess the greatest hope in the world.  The hope that all things will be subordinated to the Son serves as an anchor for all believers' lives.  It is THE source of stability in the sea of life.  Circumstances change, but believers have a firm, unchanging hope.  It is both firm and steady because it partakes of the eternal; it "entered into that within the veil," a reference to the Son's priesthood.  The allusion to the sanctuary, the Holy of Holies, which existed beyond the veil of both the Tabernacle and the Jerusalem Temple, directs attention to the high priestly work of Jesus.  Once a year on the Day of Atonement, the high priest sprinkled the blood of sacrifice upon the lid of the Ark of the Covenant, but he was not allowed to linger there.  This reference provides a transition back to Jesus' superiority to the Aaronic high priesthood, begun in 5:1.  As High Priest, Jesus has entered into the holy of holies in heaven as our forerunner (prodromos).  Like a scout or pioneer, He has gone before us, and we are to follow His path.  On the basis of His entrance, believers can follow Him into the very presence of God.  According to Romans 8:34, He is there making intercession for us.  He has met all the requirements of a high priest.  His work is not effective only from one annual Day of Atonement to another; instead, it is "forever." "On our behalf" indicates that Jesus did something for us.  It is not patterned after the work of Aaron, but it is modeled after the priesthood of Melchizedek (Genesis 14:18-20).

Praise/Prayer:

My dear Father, I can only shout, "Hallelujah!"  How wonderful it is to know that Jesus is the Eternal High Priest, because He lives, we have that HOPE of eternal life.  Our walk with Him does not end when we walk through the veil of death.  He intercedes for us now, but then He will welcome us home.  What a wonderful experience it is to follow the path He has made.  We can't get lost that way.  I love the way You have done everything for us, and all we have to do is believe and follow. Amen!
