Characteristics of the Church

SCRIPTURE:
ACTS 2:42-47

This is a lightning summary of the characteristics of the early Church. As you read this, compare your church with what you find here.

(1st) It was a learning Church. They persisted in listening to the apostles as they taught. Because the riches of Jesus are inexhaustible, we should forever be going forward. We should count it a wasted day when we do not learn something new and when we have not dug deeper into the wisdom and grace of God.

(2nd) It was a Church of fellowship. It had what someone called the great quality of togetherness. The Church is a real Church only when it is a band of brothers.

(3rd) It was a praying Church. These early Christians knew that they could not meet life in their own strength and that they did not need to. They were able to meet the problems of life because they would first meet with God.

(4th) It was a Church where miraculous things happened. Signs and wonders were there. If we expect great things from God and attempt great things for God, great things happen. More miraculous things would happen if we believed that we, together with God, could make them happen.

(5th) It was a sharing Church. The early Christians had an intense feeling of responsibility for each other. A real Christian cannot bear to have too much when others have too little.

(6th) It was a worshiping Church. They never forgot to attend God's house. Great things can happen when we come to come together. The Holy Spirit moves upon worshiping people.

(7th) It was a happy Church: Gladness was there. A gloomy Christian is a contradiction in terms. Real Christianity is a lovely thing!

Life Application:  As you attend church, take the living Holy Spirit with you.  The atmosphere in your Church depends on the Spirit you take with you and the way you greet others.  Pass the love around!

Praise/Prayer: Dear Father, thank You for the Bible - especially the Book of Acts.  There is so much for us to learn from the early Church.  You want Your children to learn what Church should be like.  Please forgive us for the times we went to Church with the wrong attitude.  I want Your love shining through me.  Amen!
