A Miracle in a Cottage

LUKE 4:38-39 --

Here, Luke, the doctor writes. In the grip of a major fever-every word is a medical term. "In the grip of" is the medical Greek for someone definitely laid up with an illness. The Greek medical writers divided fevers into two classes-major and minor. Luke knew just how to describe this illness.

There are three great truths in this short incident. (1stJesus was always ready to serve. He had just left the Temple. No sooner had Jesus left the Temple and entered Peter's house than the insistent cry of human need met Him. He answered it without complaint. Jesus was always ready to minister; His followers must be the same. (2ndJesus did not need a crowd to work a miracle. He was prepared to put out His power in a village cottage in Capernaum when the crowds were gone. (3rd) When Peter's mother-in-law was cured, immediately she began to serve them. She realized that she had been given back her health to spend it in service of others. Mothers are like that. We would do well to remember that it is God who gave us the priceless gift of health and strength, He gave it that we might use it in the service of others. Luke goes on to tell us that when evening came, the people of the community brought all the sick to Jesus and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them. Demons came out of many, crying "You are the Son of God!" He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak because they knew that He was the Christ.

The Gospel writer's accounts of Jesus' power, purposes, and way of life on earth are often associated with healings, miracles and driving demons out of people's lives. That was one of the purposes of His coming. God's kingdom includes benefits for the body and mind as well as for the soul and spirit.

Life Application: What happens to you when you read of Jesus healing people or delivering them from demons? I hope you are a true believer and want Him to do the same for you or someone you know. Become a channel for the power of the Holy Spirit to flow and watch what God will do.

Praise/Prayer: Dear Father, I am so thankful that the miracle-working power of Heaven has not changed. Just this morning a group of my friends laid hands on me and prayed, expecting a miracle, and so am I. Today is the day of supernatural Heavenly power to be active on earth. Praise God! The day of miracles is not over. In Jesus' name, we expect miracles. Amen!
