Waiting for the Coming of the Lord

Scripture of the DayJAMES 5:7-9

Reflection on the Scripture of the Day

The early church lived in expectation of the immediate Second Coming of Jesus. James exhorts his people to wait with patience for the few years which remained. The Greek word translated “be patient” basically means “be long-suffering.” Long-suffering is a fruit of the Spirit, (Galatians 5:22).
The New Testament is clear to say that no man knows the day or the hour when Jesus comes again. From this basic fact, one thing is clear. Although we heed the signs, human speculation in setting dates about the Second Coming is not only useless, it is blasphemous; for surely no person should seek to gain a knowledge which is hidden from Jesus.

The one thing that the New Testament does say about the Second Coming is that it will be sudden as the lightning and as unexpected as a thief in the night (Matthew 24:27, 37, 39; 1 Thessalonians 5:2; 2 Peter 3:10). Man cannot wait to get ready; he must be ready at all times in anticipation of its coming.

So, the New Testament urges certain duties upon men. (1) They must be forever on watch (1 Peter 4:7). (2) Long delay must not produce despair or forgetfulness (2 Peter 3:4). God does not see time as humans do. To Him a thousand years are as a watch in the night. The passing of time does not mean that He has changed His mind. (3) People must use the time given to prepare for the coming King. They must be sober (1 Peter 4:7). They must strive for holiness (1 Thessalonians 3:13). (4) They must put off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light now because the day is far spent (Romans 13:11-14).   They must prepare themselves to greet the coming of the King with joy and without shame.

Life Application:

We don’t know when Jesus will come back. Are you ready? Will He find you busy about His kingdom work? GET READY-BE READY ALL THE TIME!

From an old hymn:
“Some golden daybreak Jesus will come;
Some golden daybreak, battles all won,
He’ll shout the victory, break thro’ the blue,
Some golden daybreak for me, for you.”
Father, I know that You have set the time for Jesus’ return and only You know when that will be. So, I pray for sleeping believers because I don’t want them to miss Heaven. World events don’t seem to awaken them; I don’t know what will, but You do. Amen!
