Reflection on the Scripture of the Day

As he comes to the end of this section, James reminds his readers of two great facts of the Christian life. (1) The Believer lives under the law of liberty, and it is by the law of liberty he will be judged. What he means is, unlike the Pharisee and the orthodox Jew, the Believer is not a man whose life is governed by the external pressure of a whole series of rules and regulations imposed on him from outside. He is governed by the inner compulsion of love. He follows the right way, the way of the love of God and the love of mankind and not because any external law compels him to do so. Nor is it because any threat of punishment frightens him into doing so; it is because the love of Jesus in his heart makes him desire to do so. (2) The Believer must ever remember that only he who shows mercy will find mercy.

This is a principle that runs through all Scripture. Jesus said, “Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:7). “If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (Matthew 6:14-15). “Judge not, that you be not judged” (Matthew 7:1-2). Jesus tells of the condemnation which fell upon the unforgiving servant and ends the parable by saying, “So, also, my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart” (Matthew 18:22-35).

Mercy triumphs over judgment! The believer who has received God’s mercy and in his daily life fulfills the “ROYAL LAW” which includes mercy, can face the coming judgment with confidence.

Life Application:

Are you the kind of a person who shows mercy to the people you know as well as people you don’t know? Let the river of mercy flow from your life!

Prayer/ Praise:

Dear FatherI am so thankful that You are the God of ever-loving MERCY. Your mercy doesn’t run out and You do not want mine to run out. You have been so faithful in setting the right example of mercy and love before me that You want me to follow. I’m trying to show mercy to everyone I meet who needs mercy and love. Thanks for setting the example for us. Amen!
