Scripture Reading of the Day
Acts 1:6-8 (NIV)
6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?
7 He said to them: It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Reflections on the Scripture Reading of the Day
About Jesus’ answer: Jesus is prophesying that in a short time there would come a powerful anointing of the Spirit of God on the whole band of followers. It would be somewhat like that when King Saul joined the band of prophets and spoke words of prophecy, or as the ancient prophets were “moved by the Spirit” (1 Samuel 10:1-13; Numbers 11:24-30). Just as Jesus had predicted, the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples in the upper room as is told in Acts 2
Jesus meant by “the Kingdom of God” that with Him had come a new divine rule and entrance into the affairs of mankind. Through His leadership miraculous and divine intervention was happening. People were being healed and delivered from the control of the devil, and by accepting Him as their guide and Messiah were being brought into His Movement, which Jesus called the Kingdom of God. Jesus warned the Temple authorities that “the Kingdom of God” would be taken away from them and given to a people “who would bring forth the fruits thereof”. It was also to warn that a proper understanding of this prophecy involves seeing that the people, the followers, of Jesus, would be withdrawn from political Israel. At the last Passover Jesus also spoke of His Father having given Him a kingdom or rule and that He would be sharing His rule with His chosen apostles. So the question “at this time” is really, “when You return, is that when you will set up your kingdom?”
There is a time coming when Jesus will return and set up His kingdom and rule for a thousand years.
Dear Father, You have set the time for things to happen, and in your time they do, no matter what mankind thinks. We have to accept the fact that Your timing is always right, but we get anxious and want Jesus’ kingdom to come now and change our world. Father, I realize that you know our world is in a mess with murders, crime, and the killing of those who choose to follow You. I know that in Revelation 6:11 You have set a quota for the number of Christian martyrs, and in your time this will come to an end. But we long for Your kingdom to come on earth. Amen!
